Healing After Harm Series

Updated: Jun 17

Welcome to Healing After Harm — a blog series created with you in mind.

This space is for the individual who needs healing. The woman who stayed too long in a place where she was being hurt. The girl inside you who didn’t feel safe enough to leave. The version of you who kept hoping things would change. This is where we pause… and begin to understand why we stayed.

Because when we understand the root, we open the door to healing.

Let me be honest — the journey won’t be easy. Healing is not simple, and it’s not quick. But it’s necessary. Because once you begin to truly heal, you start to love yourself in a way that refuses to settle. You’ll stop chasing love in places where it doesn’t live.

You deserve better — and I’m here to walk alongside you.

I invite you to join me in this Healing After Harm series.

The Importance of Support Groups

Support groups are powerful.

They provide something so many of us have gone without: a safe space to be real, to be seen, and to be supported.

At Sistren Haven, our support groups are specifically designed for Black and Brown women who have experienced unhealthy, toxic, or emotionally abusive relationships. This isn’t just a place to vent — it’s a place to heal.

Sisterhood within a support group helps break the cycle.

Because when we come together, we realize:

  • You are not alone.

  • You are not crazy.

  • You do not have to stay stuck.

This group is here to remind you of your power, your voice, and your worthiness — even if life, love, or trauma made you forget.

I want you to feel:

Comfortable enough to share

Confident in your growth

Safe both inside and outside of this group

Because real healing happens in community.

So, when you’re ready, take a seat, sis.

We are doing this together!

Shared Experiences

In Sistren Haven’s support group, our bond runs deeper than just conversation.

Our common thread is this:

We are Black and Brown women who were in relationships with Black and Brown men that turned harmful.

We didn’t get the “Black love” or “Brown love” we hoped for.

Instead, we were left navigating pain, fear, confusion — and silence.

The world outside this group may never understand why you stayed.

Why you didn’t press charges.

Why you didn’t leave the first time.

But in this space, you don’t need to explain because we get it.

The stories may not be identical, but the impact is familiar:

  • The emotional exhaustion

  • The isolation

  • The fear of not being believed

  • The guilt for loving someone who hurt us

That’s why Sistren Haven is different.

This isn’t just another support group, it’s a sacred space built specifically for us, by us.

Emotional Support

Support groups provide emotional support that is crucial for mental health. Members can express their feelings and receive validation from others who understand their struggles. This support can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Empowerment

Being part of a support group can empower Black women. Sharing stories and strategies can inspire members to take action in their own lives. Empowerment comes from knowing that you are not alone and that others have faced similar challenges.

Building Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships are built on trust, respect, and communication. Here are some key elements to consider when navigating relationships within a support group.

Trust

Trust is the foundation of any healthy relationship. In a support group, it is essential to create an environment where members feel safe sharing their thoughts and feelings. This can be achieved by establishing ground rules, such as confidentiality and respect for differing opinions.

Respect

Respecting each other's experiences and perspectives is vital. Each member brings a unique background and viewpoint to the group. Acknowledging and valuing these differences can strengthen the bonds between members.

Communication

Open and honest communication is crucial for healthy relationships. Encourage group members to express their thoughts and feelings freely. Active listening is equally important. When someone shares, others should listen without interrupting or judging.

Practical Tips for Navigating Relationships in Support Groups

Navigating relationships in a support group can be rewarding but also requires effort. Here are some practical tips to help foster healthy connections.

Be Open-Minded

Approach discussions with an open mind. Be willing to hear different perspectives and experiences. This openness can lead to deeper understanding and connection.

Share Your Story

Sharing your own experiences can help others feel comfortable doing the same. Vulnerability can create a strong bond among group members. However, it is essential to share at your own pace.

Set Boundaries

While sharing is important, it is also crucial to set personal boundaries. Know what you are comfortable discussing and what topics you prefer to avoid. Communicate these boundaries to the group.

Offer Support

Be there for your fellow group members. Sometimes, just listening can be a powerful form of support. Offer encouragement and understanding when someone is going through a tough time.

Celebrate Achievements

Celebrate the successes of group members, no matter how small. Recognizing achievements can boost morale and foster a sense of community. Whether it is a personal milestone or a professional accomplishment, celebrating together strengthens relationships.

The Role of Leadership in Support Groups

Effective leadership is vital for the success of any support group. A good leader can guide discussions, ensure everyone has a voice, and maintain a positive atmosphere.

Facilitation Skills

A leader should possess strong facilitation skills. This includes guiding conversations, managing conflicts, and ensuring that all members feel included. A skilled facilitator can help the group stay focused and productive.

Creating a Safe Space

Leaders must prioritize creating a safe space for all members. This involves setting clear guidelines for discussions and addressing any behavior that undermines trust or respect.

Encouraging Participation

A good leader encourages participation from all members. This can be done by asking open-ended questions and inviting quieter members to share their thoughts. Ensuring everyone has a chance to speak fosters a sense of belonging.

Challenges in Support Groups

While support groups can be incredibly beneficial, they are not without challenges. Understanding these challenges can help members navigate them more effectively.

Conflict Resolution

Conflicts may arise in any group setting. It is essential to address conflicts promptly and constructively. Encourage open dialogue and seek to understand different viewpoints.

Emotional Triggers

Discussions may bring up emotional triggers for some members. It is important to be sensitive to these triggers and create an environment where members can express their feelings safely.

Commitment Levels

Not all members may be equally committed to the group. Some may attend sporadically, while others may be more engaged. It is essential to communicate the importance of commitment to the group’s success.

The Impact of Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships within a support group can have a profound impact on individual well-being. Here are some of the positive effects of fostering these connections.

Improved Mental Health

Being part of a supportive community can lead to improved mental health. Members often report feeling less anxious and more confident after participating in group discussions.

Enhanced Coping Skills

Support groups can provide valuable coping strategies. Members can share techniques that have worked for them, helping others navigate their challenges more effectively.

Lifelong Friendships

Many members find lifelong friendships through support groups. These connections can extend beyond the group, providing ongoing support and companionship.

Embracing the Journey Together

Navigating healthy relationships as Black women can be a rewarding journey. Support groups offer a unique opportunity to connect, share, and grow together. By fostering trust, respect, and open communication, members can create a nurturing environment that benefits everyone.

As you embark on this journey, remember that you are not alone. The experiences and insights shared within a support group can empower you to navigate life's challenges with confidence. Embrace the connections you make, and let them guide you toward healthier relationships in all areas of your life.

In the end, the journey of building healthy relationships is ongoing. Each step taken within a support group can lead to personal growth and a deeper understanding of oneself and others. Embrace the power of community, and let it uplift you as you navigate the complexities of life together.
